Setting up mail filtering with Outlook Express

These instructions are for Microsoft Outlook Express 6.  Older  versions are pretty much the same.

IMPORTANT:  The screens below are pictures of what (should) show up on your screen as you configure Outlook Express.  Print out these instructions if you like so that you can follow along as you configure your machine.  Clicking on the pictures below will not do much of anything :-)

If you want to put spam in it's own folder (rather than delete it) you first need to create a place to put it.  Click on the 'Local Folders' in the folder list and then pick 'File' and 'New Folder':

Then create the folder:

and click OK.  Now you need to create the rule to move the spam.  From the main menu pick Tools, Message Rules, Mail as show below:

This screen should show up:

Click the boxes for "Where the Subject line contains specific words", "Move it to the specified folder" and name the rule "Spam" in the "Name of the rule:" box.  Next click on contains specific words to get to:

enter [*] and click the Add button and then OK. Click on specified to get to this screen:

Click on the folder you want to move the mail to (spam in this case) and then click OK.  You should now see the finished rule:

Click OK and you are done :-)
